MTUC Welcomes Recruitment Of Cambodia's Domestic Workers

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today welcomed the government's decision to recruit Cambodia's domestic workers, thus ending Cambodia’s two-year moratorium on the recruitment. MTUC secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor said the new practice would remove the involvement of agents and middlemen and effectively eliminate the huge recruitment fee, which is about RM8,000 to RM12,000 (US$2,510 to US$3,766). "This new procedure will give a big relief to families who need domestic workers," he said in a statement, here. He said since Malaysia and Cambodia had taken the initiative to provide comprehensive training to the domestic workers, they should be rewarded with a minimum wage of RM700 (US$219). The MTUC also suggested that the Employment Act be applied to domestic workers as it would create a definite solution and provide legal protection for them. -- BERNAMA
