Condition Conducive in Timika On OPM Anniversary

Timika, Papua, Dec 2 (Antara) - The security condition is conducive in Tamika, Papua ahead and after Dec 1, the anniversary day of the separatist movement Free Papua Organization (OPM). "The peaceful condition in Tmika was thanks to support from all peace loving people in this area," chief of Mimika police operation division Comr. Arnolis Korwa said here on Monday. The Mimika district police recruited 300 police personnel backed up by a company of mobile police force and military unit to forestall security disturbance in Timika on that day. On Saturday of Nov 30, security officers were placed in every corner of the city to prevent any attempt of penetration by separatists and ensure that no people would hoist the OPM flag of Morning Star that day. "Thanks God, this time it was not as it was in the past. We hope that things would be better again in the future and the people would not be easily provoked to create trouble," Korwa said. On Sunday, a small group of people said prayer to commemorate the OPM day in the city of Timika. The ceremony took place from 14.000 to 18.00 local time without incident. Korwa said the Mimika police would continue to be on guard for the next three days to ensure that peaceful condition would continue to prevail. Meanwhile, a deadly raid by police was reported in a village near the provincial city of Jayapura . A man shot was shot during the raid and villagers identified the man as village secretary Eduard Bunyan, but the police said the victim was an OPM member. Jakarta has yet to deal with a hot spot in Papua where separatists still lurking in the mountain jungles.
