Foreign military attaches to visit combat training center

SEOUL, Nov. 20 (Yonhap) -- A group of foreign military attaches stationed in
Seoul will participate in a mock drill at an Army training center on Friday as
part of an annual program involving South Korea's military facilities.
Nineteen attaches from 14 countries will visit the Korea Combat Training Center
(KCTC) in Gangwon Province, west of Seoul, to take part in the mock drill,
according to the Army on Thursday. The group includes Lt. Col. Steve Lee, U.S.
defense adviser, and Col. Oe Yasutomo from the Japanese Army.
"The event is expected to demonstrate to high-ranking foreign military officers
the effectiveness of the Korean Army's training system and the strength of the
army. It will also give (the foreign officers) the opportunity to experience the
KCTC system," said the Army in a press release.
During the drill, the officers will form a platoon and will be armed with K-2
rifles loaded with blank cartridges. Training will involve capturing a fortress
against an enemy battalion, the Army said.
"The foreign attaches chose the KCTC for this year's program," said Captain Lee
Kyung-ho of the Army's public affairs office.
The KCTC, opened in 2005, replicates actual war zone conditions and provides
critical combat training and maneuvers for the Army.
