Indonesian Defense Force Conducts Leaders Meeting 2014

Jakarta, Jan 8 (Antara) - Indonesian Defense Force Commander General Moeldoko has opened the leaders meeting 2014 to discuss the national military`s strategic plans and work progress evaluation. General Moeldoko stated during the opening event of the Indonesian Defense Force`s Leaders Meeting, here on Wednesday, that the National Military aims to focus on two priorities, strengthening national security and increasing soldiers` welfare. Moeldoko pointed out that the conducive situation across the regions in 2013 should now be enhanced by strengthening the intelligence system and territorial security, particularly in the border areas. "In the border areas, we conduct comprehensive operations that involve the army, navy and air force, to avoid all kinds of friction," Moeldoko explained. Regarding the shooting cases in Papua, which had victims from the military force, General Moeldoko admitted that the service operation with a welfare oriented approach has not produced good results. "Rather than conducting military operations, we have adopted a more humane approach, yet the armed groups are still performing acts of disobedience. It is unfair for the Defense Forces to allow this to continue without repercussions," he added. Meanwhile, in order to increase soldiers` welfare, Moeldoko noted that the 37 percent remuneration is not adequate to lead a prosperous life. "An addition of 20 percent to the current remuneration will be fair and lift the financial burden," he added. In the 2014 budget, the Defense Force will receive Rp86 trillions, of which 52 percent will be used for routine expenditures and 48 percent for the development sector. During the Indonesian Defense Force`s Leaders Meeting from January 8 to 13, 2014, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to brief the meeting`s participants on Thursday, January 9. A National Static Show of Defense Equipments that was participated by 38 institutions was also held during the event.
