KTF, Huawei sign network research MOU
SEOUL, Nov. 20 (Yonhap) -- KTF Co., South Korea's second-largest wireless
carrier, said Thursday it reached a tentative agreement with Huawei Technologies
Co. of China to jointly research and develop mobile networks.
The memorandum of understanding with Huawei, China's biggest phone-equipment
maker, calls for cooperation in the development of femtocells, which are used in
relaying mobile signals, KTF said in a statement. Financial terms weren't
disclosed.
A femtocell is an indoor access point that receives wireless signals inside
buildings for better reception. The technology may help reduce costs by reducing
congestion on existing wireless networks.
"Co-development of next-generation telecommunications technology may serve as a
cornerstone for future mobile convergence services," Kang Sang-yong, head of
KTF's network research center, said.
