Masterpieces from France's Pompidou Centre to be exhibited in Seoul

SEOUL, Nov. 21 (Yonhap) -- An exhibition of masterpieces from France's Centre
Georges Pompidou, widely known as the Pompidou Centre, opens Friday in Seoul,
featuring works displayed for the first time in South Korea.

Titled "Arcadia: Heaven for Artists," the exhibition of 79 pieces will be held at
the Seoul Museum of Arts in central Seoul and will run through March 22, 2009.
Some 39 artists, including 20th century greats Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and
Miro, as well as contemporary artists like Yves Klein and Gary Hill will be
represented, museum officials said. The exhibit's theme focuses on how images of
heaven were depicted and idealized by Parisian artists after the 20th century by
looking into the relationship between myth, history and literature, they said.
Arranged by Didier Ottinger, chief curator of the Pompidou Centre, the exhibition
is divided into 10 smaller themes, including "Golden Age," "Joy," "Messenger,"
"Recovered Arcadia" and "Lunch on the Grass."
"Arcadia" refers to a region in Greece and is often depicted as a blessed,
affluent land in ancient Romance literature.
