Lee to hold bilateral summit talks with four APEC leaders

LIMA, Nov. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is planning to hold a series of bilateral summit talks with counterparts from the U.S., Colombia, Singapore and Chile on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum set to take place in the Peruvian capital Lima this weekend, a top aide for Lee said Friday.

Lee arrived in Lima on Thursday for a two-day state visit and to attend the
annual APEC forum on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, Lee will hold summit talks with U.S. President George W. Bush for
discussions on the denuclearization of North Korea and closer bilateral
cooperation in overcoming the global financial crisis.
Lee and Bush will then hold a three-way summit meeting involving Japanese Prime
Minister Taro Aso to discuss similar agendas. This will mark the first time in
two and a half years that the three countries have held such a summit. In
November 2006, Lee's predecessor, Roh Moo-hyun, held a three-way summit with Bush
and then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, also on the sidelines of the APEC
event.
In addition, Lee will separately meet with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and
Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to discuss ways to expand bilateral
economic cooperation.
"In talks with the Colombian leader, Lee will ask for support for South Korean
companies seeking to advance into the Latin American country's infrastructure and
resources sectors," said the presidential aide.
"Lee's talks with the Singaporean leader will be focused on expanding bilateral
cooperation over the worldwide financial crisis and in the defense industry
sector. Notably, Lee will call for Singapore's support for South Korea's entry
into the Financial Stability Forum (FSF)," the aide said.
The FSF was created in February 1999 by national authorities to promote stability
in significant international financial centers through enhanced information
exchange and international cooperation in financial supervision and surveillance.
On Sunday, Lee will hold a breakfast meeting with Chilean President Michelle
Bachelet to assess the latest developments in bilateral trade and discuss closer
cooperation in Chile's mineral resources and construction sectors. A bilateral
free trade agreement between South Korea and Chile took effect in 2004.
