N. Korea thrash Mexico to move to women's World Cup quarterfinals
SEOUL, Nov. 28 (Yonhap) -- Defending champions North Korea trounced Mexico 5-1 to
secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2008 women's World Cup in Chile on
Friday (Korean time), organizers said.
The victory at the Nelson Oyarzun stadium in Chilean allowed North Korea to
clinch second place in Group B and advance to the quarterfinal match against
Japan on Monday, FIFA said on its Web site.
Sixteen nations are competing in the biennial event, in which North Korea stormed
to the 2006 title as debutants.
North Korea are a powerhouse in women's football. They became regional champions
in the Asian Cup tournament in June, and the country also won the under-19 AFC
tournament last year.
