A group of ministers visited Atyrau
Atyrau, 28 November 2008 (Khabar) - They discussed some social and ecological issues as in the near future, a special sea dock which is to become home to oil clean-up ships to be used in case of oil spillages at sea deposits, is planned to be built on the Ural river bank near the village of Damba. Residents of coastal villages and local authorities are afraid the new facility might have a harmful influence on the region’s ecology.
Kadyr Mazhitov, fishery industry veteran:
- Some valuable kinds of fish migrate through the Ural River. These fish stay there for winter as there is enough food for them in this region. Even if it is not an oil spillage, the powerful engines of ships might damage the fragile under-water ecological system making thousands of fishermen jobless.
According to the minister for environmental protection, this concern is quite reasonable.
Nurlan Iskakov, Minister for Environmental Protection of RK:
- We suggested that the company considers some alternatives which cause no threat to the environment. They will have to take environmental protection tests before launching it.
The other issues at the meeting was devoted to sulfur as over 8 million tonnes of it is now stored at Tengiz. The delegation members came to the common conclusion that it is necessary to increase fines for excessive reserves of hazardous waste. Also, the resettlement of people from the villages of Yeskerne and Baichunas from the industrial area of the Agip KCO oil complex, the introduction of shift work at the company as well as toughening up on the recruitment of foreign employees are among the most topical issues to be solved. Negotiations devoted to the protection of local employment rights continued at TengizChevrOil and the Atyrau refinery. There, the meeting participants signed some memoranda on labour security and guarantees for employees.
Berdibek Saparbayev, Minister for Labour and Social Security of RK:
- The task is to avoid redundancies. If it is unavoidable, the employers will have to transfer these people to other workshops or production facilities. If they have no qualification to work in such places, the employer will have to retrain them to provide them with a new trade and job.
Such memoranda are expected to be signed with all the largest companies in the Republic.
