GS Caltex starts production at new diesel plant

By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, Dec. 8 (Yonhap) -- GS Caltex Corp., South Korea's second-largest refiner,
said Monday that it started commercial production at its fourth diesel
hydro-desulfurization plant from Saturday.
The plant, into which 335 billion-won (US$229 million) has been invested, has the
capacity to remove sulfur from 70,000 barrels of diesel daily, GS Caltex said in
a statement.
Hydro-desulfurizers help refiners produce eco-friendly fuels that reduce air
pollution by removing sulfur from diesel.
With the plant operations, GS Caltex's diesel processing capacity was raised to
260,000 barrels a day, the company said.
GS Caltex is also working on a three-trillion-won third heavy oil upgrading unit
that converts heavy oil into profitable transportation fuels.
Unlisted GS Caltex is a 50-50 joint venture between GS Holdings Corp. of South
Korea and Chevron Corp., the second-biggest U.S. oil company.
