News Focus: RI ORGANIZATIONS TO SEND JIHAD FIGHTERS, VOLUNTARY WORKERS TO PALESTINE
By Eliswan Azly
Jakarta, Jan 3 (ANTARA) - Israel's prolonged air strikes which had killed over 435 people in the Gaza Strip till the seventh day of the Zionist country's intention to paralyze the strongholds of Hamas fighters has prompted muslims in other parts of the world including in Indonesia to help Palestinian citizens.
Israeli brutality turned out to have inspired an Islam-based organization in Aceh province of Indonesia to recruit some jihad (martyr) fighters who are ready to be sent to Palestine through whatever ways to face Israeli continuing onslaught, while another Islam-based organizations in West Java only wanted to send voluntary workers to the Gaza Strip to provide humanitarian aid and medical assistance to Palestinian victims.
The Aceh chapter of the Islam Defenders' Front (FPI), for example, will reportedly recruit Muslims ready to become jihad (martyr) fighters to face Israeli military onslaught in Palestine, a spokesman said.
"The recruitment of jihad fighters to Palestine will be conducted on January 5, 2009. At present, some 13 applicants wishing to become jihad fighters have already registered themselves," Yusuf Al-Qardhany, chairman of FPI's Aceh chapter, said in Banda Aceh on Saturday.
According to him, at least 60 jihad fighters from Aceh will be sent to Palestine via Eqypt.
Prior to their dispatch to Palestine, they would be given military training for a week, Yusuf said, adding there were military training grounds in Aceh like those ever sent to Afghanistan.
The registration for the recruitment of jihad fighters would be opened for two weeks starting January 5, 2009. The applicants would have to fill a form containing the approval of their parents for their dispatch to Palestine as jihad fighters.
The sending of martyr fighters, according to Yusuf, was part of FPI's support for its Palestinian brothers who had to struggle for their land from Israeli occupation.
"As a manifestation of Muslim brotherhood, we are ready to become martyr fighters to help our muslim brothers in facing the brutality of Israeli forces.
Contrary to FPI, another Islamic Unity organization (Persis) was reported to be willing to send voluntary workers to Gaza Strip to help Palestian civilians who had fallen victims in the Zionist military attack.
"At least 50 voluntary workers will be recruited to be sent to Gaza Strip for humanitarian mission. We will cooperate with Mer-C for their placement in Gaza," said HM Idad Soemarta, Persis Chairman of Bandung chapter on Saturday.
At present, Idad said his side was still selecting personnel eligible for humanitarian work in conflicting zone in Gaza Strip. The priority would certainly be given to volunteer workers who have good physical preparation for this task.
"The priority will be focused on the sending of doctors and paramedics in addition to workers in charge of evacuating the victims and refugees services," he said.
However he further stressed his side was still waiting for confirmation from Mer-C for their engagement in humanitarian mission. The reason was certainly inseparable from difficulty found at the entry gate to Gaza Strip through Suriah or Egypt.
"Latest information said that all accesses to Gaza were closed. But we hope there will be more possibility to take humanitarian aid and to give assistance to Palestinian civilians," Idad said.
Earlier, Persis itself had sent a letter to the UN headquarter and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to take more concrete action to stop Israeli aggression and brutality.
Commenting on local Islamic organizations' intention to send jihad fighters and voluntary workers, Dr Sofyan Siregar, a political analyst who is also a lecturer at the European Islamic University in e-mailed message said local Islam-based organizations in some provinces of Indonesia should actually uphold the law.
"All muslims in the world are angry with the Israeli brutality, but in venting our anger to that Zionist country, we must do it in a more and impressive Islamic way," he said.
"If jihad fighters will have to be recruited and sent to Gaza Strip to help Palestinians there, it's much better coordinated with the government as our Amir (leader)," he said, adding that if not, we would be regarded as non law-abiding or stubborn citizens.
According to Sofyan, the best way the local Islam-based organizations have to do is by activating fund raising activity that could be sent to Palestine to help the victims and the damaged buildings beside urging the government to intensify their diplomacy with other countries to stop Israeli attack.
As to effort to send voluntary workers as voiced out by Persis organization to Gaza, he said the initiative was highly appreciated. But it should also be coordinated with the government.
So whatever needed by voluntary workers in accomplishing their tasks in Gaza later could be better provided, so that the efforts to help Palestinians who have fallen victims in Israeli air strikes could be realized without any obstacles, Sofyan said.
In the meantime, Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) of West Java chapter KH Hafids Utsman expressed his support to the sending of voluntary workers by Persis organization but not jihad fighters to be recruited by FPI to help Palestinian people.
Under current condition, Palestinians are in need of humanitarian aid for food and health and money that can be used to rehabilitate the damaged buildings and facilities after being bombed by Israeli
