PBSI SIGNS NEW CONTRACT WITH YONEX

Jakarta, jan 4 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) signed a new contract with Yonex, its main sponsor so far, here on Saturday.

PBSI general chairman Djoko Santoso signed the contract that was worth more than the previous one with Yonex representative DK Seth who is managing director of Sunrise and Company.
Djoko said after the signing "there were several changes that benefit us and it is all for the interest of the athletes, such as its value which rose from US$1.2 million to US$1.5 million (more than Rp15 billion). (Under the new contract) we are also allowed to have accompanying sponsors."
He said the one-year contract would be reviewed every year "and so are contracts with players. A reward and punishment system will be applied for them and it will also be evaluated every year."
Regarding accompanying sponsors PBSI secretary general Yacob Rusdianto confirmed that under the present contract Yonex gave a room for athletes or PBSI to seek accompanying sponsors without binding conditions.
"So what athletes have been complaining about so far will no longer exist," Yacob said adding that obligation for non-national training players to wear Yonex products when participating in international tournaments also had been scrapped.
Djoko said although it had been improved the amount of the contract could not as yet meet the national training center's need of funds for sending 10 to 12 players to regular tournaments every year. "We need between Rp25 to Rp30 billion every year," he said.
He said he planned to seek additional funds from various parties including the government.
On the occasion Djoko also saw off a number of national training center players to the opening tournaments of the Super Series 2009 namely Malaysia Open (from January 6-11) and Korea Open (January 13 to 18).
The players include Olympic men's double champion Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, Sony Dwo Kuncoro, Adriyanti Firdasari and Pia Zebaidah.
Djoko said PBSI fully financed their trip and therefore he hoped the players could present the best of their performance.
"Of course our hope is they can be number one. However to win or to lose is common. The most important thing is the process namely that they play with all their might," he said.
