Emirati cardiologist performs cardiac catheterisation using new device to protect kidneys from toxic contrast agents

DUBAI, 7th August 2016 (WAM) --- An Emirati cardiologist has performed a cardiovascular catheterisation to treat a 60-year-old Emirati woman with a heart condition using, for the first time in the UAE, a device designed by Massachusetts-based RenalGuard Solutions, to protect the kidneys form the possible toxic effects of radio contrast media, agents injected in the body to improve the visibility of internal bodily structures during surgeries and angiography.
Cardiac consultant Abdullah Abdul Rehman Al Hajeri of the Ministry of Health and Prevention used the RenalGuard device, to treat the woman who was suffering from severe blockage of coronary arteries and was at risk of developing contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), a form of acute kidney injury resulting from toxic contrast dye.
The device rapidly removes contrast dyes used in the cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional imaging procedure.
The doctor noted that the ministry brought the new device to the UAE hospitals to treat patients with diabetes and high blood pressure who are most vulnerable to CIN, one of the leading causes of the hospital-acquired kidney injury. - Emirates News Agency, WAM –http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395298524745.html
