Book publication falls sharply in 2008: report

SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- The number of books published last year in South Korea dropped by 20 percent compared to a year earlier as the result of an economic downturn, a local report said Friday.

A little more than 165 million books were printed last year, down 19.6 percent
from the tally for 2007, as local publishers were hit by the surging price of
paper and dwindling number of buyers, the Korean Publishers Association said.
Children's books showed the sharpest drop in publication volume of 52.6 percent,
while the number of books on religion increased by 185 percent.
Religion and self-help books are popular among readers in the time of financial
difficulties, analysts said.
The price of books rose by an average of 2 percent to 12,116 won (US$8.71) each.
