LG Electronics recalling cellphones in Canada
SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- The Canadian subsidiary of LG Electronics Inc., the
world's fifth-largest handset maker, said Wednesday it is recalling an
undisclosed number of cellphones sold in Canada over health concerns.
LG Electronics Canada said on its Web site that it had agreed to a Canadian
government-advised recall for the LG 150 mobile phone after it was found to emit
electromagnetic radiation higher than a permissible level.
"Only 150 phones made at certain production lines were found to fail the
radiation standards, but we are recalling all LG 150 phones sold in Canada," said
William Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Canada, in a statement.
The company did not disclose the number of mobile phones affected, but the
Canadian newspaper Globle Mail estimated it at 250,000 units.
It is the first time that a mobile phone model sold in the Canadian market has
been decertified for not meeting electromagnetic radiation standards, the
newspaper said.
LG Electronics Canada said it will run a free exchange program for the affected
model until the end of March.
