Korean coach to lead Peru's national volleyball team

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean volleyball coach said Wednesday that he
has signed a two-year contract to lead Peru's national women's volleyball squad,
hoping to broaden his experience and skill on the world stage.

Kim Cheol-yong, a former South Korean national team coach, said that he will
leave for the South American country next Wednesday to lead its national team
from February. Kim led Korea's women's squad to the quarterfinals of both the
1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics.
A legend in the sport, Kim also had led a local team in 1990s to 92 successive
wins and nine consecutive championships.
"I decided to take charge of the Peruvian women's national squad for two years,"
Kim, 55, told reporters. "It's difficult to disclose the contents of my contract.
But I've been told I will receive as much as the country's cabinet minister."
He said that he was recommended by former Korean coach Park Man-bok, who had led
the Peruvian team to one Olympic gold medal and silver and bronze medals in World
Championships in 1980s. The country is now seeking another competitive leader to
bring an equally glorious victory.
"I have a dream to coach on the world stage. I will transform the team into a
well-organized one along with the talented athletes," Kim, a three-time recipient
of the coach-of-the-year awards in the Korean volleyball league, said. "I will
attain good results and reinforce Korea's status in the field."
