LG Display signs LED chip deal with U.S. firm

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's LG Display Co. said Wednesday that it
has signed a deal with Cree Inc., a U.S. maker of semiconductor materials, to buy
light emitting diode (LED) chips for liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights.

The world's second-largest maker of liquid-crystal displays also agreed to
cooperate with Cree in the LCD sector for notebook computers, LG Display said in
a statement.
"LG Display plans to increase production of LCDs for notebook computers using LED
backlights by 50 percent this year," LG Display said.
