Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week ideal platform to find food security solutions, says ADFCA chief

ABU DHABI, 15th January, 2017 (WAM) -- The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2017 provides key players an ideal opportunity to ensure development and sustainability in energy and water space to mobilise and unify efforts, and share expertise to find innovative solutions to achieve food security for the world population, said Rashid Al Shariqi, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, ADFCA. ''The world is witnessing a steep demand for energy and water, which constitute the main pillars of food amid explosive growth of population and tremendous challenges facing the food sector, including climate change, water scarcity, and increasing arid and desert acreage. Against this backdrop, we desperately need solutions which are more innovative and more sustainable to tackle these challenges,'' Al Shariqi said in a statement ahead of the launch of the sustainability week on 16th January. ADSW is a global platform that addresses interconnected challenges which hinder widespread acceleration and adoption of sustainable development and clean energy. In a bid to address the global energy challenge, relations between economic development, poverty eradication, energy security, water scarcity and climate change cannot be overlooked. The largest gathering on sustainability in the history of the Middle East, the event encourages actionable outcome to carve a pathway towards worldwide sustainability worldwide. This year, ADSW will bring together world leaders, policymakers, thought leaders, experts, scientists, business leaders and academics to discuss, debate and address energy and sustainability challenges of the future. ''The UAE has gone a long way to realise sustainable development through ambitious plans to shape the future with the prime objective to deliver happiness, high-quality living standards and prosperity for the generations to follow,'' Al Shariqi said. He also underscored the ADFCA’s efforts to infuse innovation in its operations to deliver agricultural sustainability, preserve natural resources and increase efficiency of agricultural production and animal husbandry to realise the organisation’s strategic objectives for agricultural development, sustainability and food safety.
