Iraqi leader plans to visit S. Korea this month

By Lee Chi-dong
SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Yonhap) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is planning to visit
South Korea this month for a summit with his counterpart Lee Myung-bak to promote
ties between the two nations, a government source said Monday.

"South Korea and Iraq are in consultations on the planned trip," the source said
on condition of anonymity. "An exact date has yet to be set."
The Iraqi leader had initially intended to travel to Seoul last July but
indefinitely postponed the trip due to internal affairs.
Iraqi Defense Minister Abdul-Qader al-Obeidi visited South Korea last month to
discuss defense cooperation.
South Korea completed the pullout of its troops from the northern Iraqi town of
Irbil at the end of last year and is seeking to boost commercial relations with
Baghdad.
