DECLINE OF TRADITIONAL MASS MEDIA CONTINUES

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Mongolian Press Institute unveiled the results of its annual media industry study through the 18th ‘Mongolian Media – 2017’ report featuring critical statistics on the media industry and future directions on May 2, Tuesday.
The report indicates that number of active media outlets has continually decreased in the last 5 years. In particular, from 2012 to the first quarter of 2017, number of traditional media organizations lessened by 100. Furthermore, newspaper circulation decreased by 40 percent as compared to 2012 with number of magazines being reduced by 60 percent. However, it was found that radio channels extended their weekly broadcast by 7 hours and television channels by 8 hours.
Compensating for the continued decline of traditional mass media, online media outlets are on the rise. For the last 2 years, number of news websites is stable, and around 100 news websites are functioning actively as of the first quarter of 2017. Some 4700 people are working in the media industry, and half of them are journalists and editors, 56 percent of the total media staff are working in televisions.
“Provincial newspaper circulation constitutes 5.9 percent of newspaper circulation on the national level, and that is the highest number we’ve seen in the last 10 years”, emphasized M.Munkhmandakh, Director of the Press Institute.
