S. Korean firms top global display market for 5th year

SEOUL, Feb. 8 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. and other South Korean
companies topped the global display market in 2008 for the fifth consecutive
year, a market research firm and industry sources said Sunday.
According to DisplaySearch and the sources, the South Korean companies held top
shares of the world markets for liquid crystal displays (LCD), plasma display
panels (PDP), organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) and cathode ray tube (CRT)
screens.
South Korea held 46.1 percent of the global LCD market last year, up 2.4
percentage points from a year earlier and followed by Taiwan with 38.8 percent.
Samsung Electronics was the top market share holder with 25.7 percent, trailed by
LG Electronics Inc. with 20.3 percent and Taiwanese display maker AUO with 17
percent.
South Korean companies' combined share was 52.5 percent for the PDP market, 45.3
percent for the OLED sector and slightly over 60 percent for the CRT market,
according to DisplaySearch.
