UAE hails China's efforts to promote its judicial system

Geneva, February 10, 2009 (WAM) - UAE's Permanent Representative to UN in Geneva Obeid Salem Al Za'abi hailed yesterday the efforts of the People's Republic of China to develop its judicial system.

Addressing the Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session held today at UN Headquarters to review China's report, Al Za'abi praised the sweeping reformation programme in China consolidating the principle of fair trial and freedom of judiciary.

Al Za'abi also hailed China's achievements in the field of implementing several measures aimed at widening the courts of law and guaranteeing the people their right to defence. He specially commented on the jury system, which gives the people the right to select juries to render a rational, impartial verdict as it was mentioned in the Chinese report on human rights.

Participating in the discussion, Al Za'abi also asked China to enhance its judicial machinery by way of giving the judges and other personnel continuous training in their field.
