S. Korea's HIV cases top 6,000 mark

SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- The number of reported HIV cases in South Korea surpassed the 6,000 mark for the first time since the country reported an infection in 1985, a report said Tuesday.

According to the report by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a
cumulative 6,120 South Koreans contracted the AIDS-causing virus, of whom 1,084
had died by the end of December.
Last year alone, 797 new HIV cases were reported, up 7.1 percent from the
previous year's 744 increase, the report showed.
The agency said the 99 percent of cases have resulted from sexual intercourse,
with those in their 20s and 30s accounting for more than a half of the total.
The agency added that it will raise public awareness of the disease and promote
the use of condoms through education in an effort to curb the spread of the
global pandemic.
