S. Korean telecom industry's facility spending up 2.9 pct in 2008
SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Yonhap) -- Facility investments by major telecom firms in tech-savvy South Korea inched up last year as the nation's market for cell-phone and broadband Internet services saturate, industry data showed Wednesday.
Spending by the nation's six major telecom companies, including KT Corp., SK
Telecom Co. and KTF Co., gained 2.9 percent from a year earlier to 6.8 trillion
won (US$4.8 billion) in 2008, according to the data.
Marketing expenditure by the companies rose 11.5 percent to 8.2 trillion won last
year, it said.
As of the end of 2008, mobile-phone subscriptions rose to 93 percent in South
Korea, the government said earlier. That means 45.6 million people out of the
country's total population of 49 million possess a mobile phone.
In addition, the number of broadband Internet users stood at 15.4 million,
accounting for 92 percent of total households, the Korea Communications
Commission said.
