Samsung, LG dominate global LCD TV market last year
SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) --South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and LG
Electronics Inc. dominated the global market for liquid crystal display
televisions (LCD TV) last year, industry sources said Thursday.
Samsung was the top market share holder with 20 percent in 2008, up 3 percentage
points from a year earlier, while LG stood at third, raising its share by 2.4
percentage points to 10 percent, the sources said.
LG recorded a double-digit market share for the first time since 1999 when it
started its LCD TV business, they said.
The combined market share of the two South Korean companies rose 4.5 percentage
points to 30 percent.
LCD TV sales totaled about 102 million units last year in the world, they said.
Japan's Sony Corp. took the No. 2 ranking in the LCD TV market in 2008 with a 14
percent share, up 2.9 percentage points from the previous year.
Sharp Electronics of Japan, however, lost ground to hold a share of 9 percent
along with Dutch company Philips, whose share fell by 4 percentage points to 7
percent.
