Sudan hails UAE humanitarian role

Abu Dhabi, Feb 15, 2009 (WAM) - Sudan's General Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Hasbo Mohammad Rahman hailed the UAE's humanitarian active role in Sudan to allow for the return of refugees and the refreshing of development.
Rahman expressed appreciation for President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his directives to render unwavering support to the needy and vulnerable groups in Sudan.
The Sudanese official's remarks came at a meeting in Abu Dhabi with officials of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA).
Rahman also expressed appreciation to RCA's efforts and field follow-up in Darfur and Juba.
"The volume of the UAE's humanitarian support to Sudan increased significantly after it had dedicated an aircraft to carry aid from the capital city of Khartoum to Darfur and Southern Sudan", Rahman noted.
Recently, he added, 10000 tents were carried by the UAE to Sudanese refugees in different hot zones.
According to Rahman, the total number of refugees in Darfur reached 10077470 out of the total population of the state (6750000). Twenty one camps now accommodate around 327470 refugees. To date, the number of returnees reached 840376, noting that efforts are being made to encourage more refugees to return to 150 reconstructed villages. In Darfur, 641 villages have been reconstructed in the first phase.
He called on Arab humanitarian and aid agencies to step up efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
"In this regard, the UAE's efforts are credible. RCA is at the forefront of humanitarian which play a role built on transparency and credibility and has won the respect of all international agencies", Rehman remarked.
