Thai researchers develop anti-cancer mango

PHITSANULOK, Sept 6 (TNA) - Researchers from Naresuan University have developed cancer-fighting Mahachanok mangoes and will continue works to pass on the knowledge to farmers for cultivation of the healthy mangoes to the market. Faculty of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment lecturer Assistant Professor Dr Peerasak Chaiprasart said that Mahachanok mango contains high anti-oxidants than other mango varieties. Mahachanok mango is a hybrid of Thai Nang Klang mangoes and Australian Sunset mangoes. The researchers found that spraying Methyl Jasmonate in pre-harvest mangoes enhanced the levels of anti-oxidants, including carotenoid, which can reduce the risks of some forms of cancers, heart disease and cataracts Methyl Jasmonate is synthesized from linolenic acid and safe for consumption. It is used in plant defense and can enhance colour pigments in fruit skin. In Japan and US, it is used for boosting the coloration of apple skin. (TNA)
