Pomelo fair in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI, Sept 5 (TNA) – Wiang Kaen district in the northern province of Chiang Rai will hold a pomelo fair to promote its chemical-free pomeloes and introduce the Tabtim Lanna pomelo to consumers. Wiang Kaen district is known as the only production area of chemical free pomelo since 13 years ago and pomeloes there have been exported to the European Union market, which strictly require high quality products. The 20th pomelo fair will be held at the district office from Sept 8-10. This year’s highlight is a parade of nine ethnic groups and pomelo growers will join in the procession. Miss Pomelo beauty pageant and contests of best pomelo and processed pomelo products will be organized. Moreover, farmers will introduce a new variety of pomelo, Tabtim Lanna, which just gave yield this year. It textures has deep pinkisk colour like ruby. Visitors can taste and buy various kinds of pomeloes available at lower prices from growers at the fair. There are 5,500 rai (about 2,200 acres) pomelo orchards in Wiang Kaen district. It can produce about 10,000 tonnes of pomelo this year, creating an income of 400 million baht a year for growers. (TNA)
