Seoul stocks open higher on U.S. relief plan
SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened higher Thursday as investor
sentiment was buoyed by a U.S. mortgage relief plan, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 6.02 points, or 0.54
percent, to 1,119.21 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Investors took slight comfort from the U.S. government's announcement Wednesday
of a US$75 billion plan to revive the slumping housing market and the overall
economy, they said.
The local currency was trading at 1,470 won against the U.S. dollar as of 9:15
a.m., down 2 won from Wednesday's close.
