NIHR marks World Children’s Day

Manama, Nov. 20 (BNA): Bahrain joined the world today in celebrating the World Children’s Day which coincides with the annual anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s endorsement of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
The celebration asserts the importance of boosting international cooperation to promote the welfare of the children around the world. This year’s slogan casts light on the need to establish a world where all children attend school, remain safe and capable of achieving their potentials as there are around 262 million children and youngsters all over the world who are deprived of their right to education.
Protecting children’s rights is of paramount importance in Bahrain which has taken many measures in this respect like issuing the Child Law 37/2012. Bahrain also won a seat at the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for the period 2017-2021. The kingdom is also considered as one of the pioneering countries in providing specialised centres to protect children from violence and provide social awareness programmes.
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has played an active role since its inception in protecting human rights, in general, and children’s rights, in particular. The institution asserted that it will continue working on ensuring commitment to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its protocols which Bahrain joined to ensure its implementation and respect by all.
