Japanese man captured while trying to cross into N. Korea: official

By Sam Kim

SEOUL, March 19 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean military has captured a Japanese man attempting to cross the heavily armed border with North Korea, a defense official said Thursday.

The 40-year-old man approached a barbed wire fence at the border in the Cheorwon
area, about 70 kilometers north of Seoul, on Wednesday night and was detained
after being spotted by South Korean guards, the official said.
Only identified as K, the man initially said he was trying to cross into North
Korea in an attempt to protest tension on the divided peninsula and promote the
cause of peace, the official said.
He has been handed over to the Japanese embassy in Seoul and recanted his earlier
statements about his motive, the source added.
The two Koreas remain in a technical state of war after the 1950-53 Korean War
ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.
