Volkswagen targets 15 pct rise in 2009 sales in S. Korea
GOYANG, South Korea, April 2 (Yonhap) -- Volkswagen AG, Europe's largest
automaker, said Thursday it was targeting 15 percent sales growth to 6,000 units
in South Korea for 2009.
European carmakers are gaining in the South Korean market for imported vehicles
as Japanese rivals grapple with a stronger yen, which has made their cars more
expensive here.
"This year, our target is to sell 6,000 cars in South Korea," said Park
Dong-hoon, president of Volkswagen's Korean unit, on the sidelines of the 2009
Seoul Motor Show.
Park said Volkswagen's sales in February jumped more than 50 percent, prompting
it to raise the sales target for this year.
Sales of imported cars in South Korea are expected to drop 17.3 percent this year
to 51,000 units, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors
Association.
