BCCI hosts seminar on non-biodegradable plastics

Manama, June 26 (BNA): Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) today hosted an induction seminar entitled (List of plastic products. Conditions and application) organized by the Supreme Council for Environment in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and tourism. The seminar aimed at introducing to the manufacturers and suppliers of plastics the registration mechanisms for the application for licensing of manufacturing and import of plastic products, in addition to control procedures at customs exits and local markets, in preparation for the implementation of the ministerial resolution 11 of 2019 on the regulations for plastic products to come into force on July 25. Acting Director of the SCE's Assessment and Control Directorate, Luma Al Mahrous, spoke about the negative environmental effects of the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags on the environment, human health, as well as the wildlife, highlighting the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal. Al Mahrous said the national initiative is in implementation of the directives of the Coordination Committee chaired by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander, First Deputy Prime Minister, and the resolution of the Ministerial Committee for Reconstruction and Infrastructure on the Regulation and Reduction of the Use of Plastic Bags and Consumables, as well as the resolution of the Ministerial Committee of Services and Infrastructure and the national strategy for waste management. She added that 24 companies operating in Bahrain in the field of manufacturing plastic products are capable of producing biodegradable plastic products. Director of Standards and Metrology at the Industry Ministry said that the ministry would monitor the border exits and markets, and that the Public Prosecution would take legal action against violators.
