Lee vows all-out support for Gwangju's Universiade bid

SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak Monday promised full government support for Gwangju's bid to host the 2015 Summer Universiade, as well as for its successful hosting of the event, during his meeting with officials from the international governing body of the games.

Gwangju, about 350 km south of Seoul, is one of South Korea's major metropolitan
areas.
"While stressing Gwangju is one of the country's most well preserved cultural
cities and the birthplace of Korean democracy and peace, the president said at
the meeting that it is perfect for the event that brings together world youth
seeking to promote friendship, harmony and world peace," the presidential office
Cheong Wa Dae said in a press release.
"The president also promised full government support for Gwangju's bid and its
successful hosting of the 2015 Summer Universiade," it said of Lee's meeting with
a six-member delegation from the International University Sports Federation, also
known as FISU.
The FISU inspectors, headed by Stefan Bergh, arrived here earlier Monday for a
four-day visit to determine whether the South Korean city is fit to host the
biennial event. They will depart Thursday for Canada's Edmonton, which is
competing against Gwangju for the 2015 Summer Games, along with Taiwan's Taipei.
