UAE Ambassador to China hails setting up of UAE pavilion at Shanghai International Expo 2010

Beijing, April 9, 2009 (WAM) - UAE Ambassador to China Mohammed Rashid Al Boot, has lauded the step taken by the UAE to participate at Shanghai International Expo 2010 with a national pavilion.
He told Emirates News Agency (WAM) in a statement that the setting up of a national pavilion by National Media Council at Shanghai Expo 2010 "represents a qualitative shift in the relations between the two friendly countries and a step to highlight the UAE achievements in all fields".
Al Boot added that the participation also shows keenness of the UAE leadership to etch presence of the UAE at international events such as Shanghai to showcase its achievements. HE added that the UAE is taking part at the-184 day event alongside over 204 countries, as well as regional groupings and international organisations.
"The setting of the UAE stand over land area of 6, 000 square metre near China's pavilion, indicates that the two countries are well ahead on bolstering the strategic partnership", he said. Al Boot expected that visitors from early May - October 31, 2010 may reach 70 million.
The UAE envoy to China hoped that all tourism departments, corporations and economic bodies in the UAE would participate in the UAE Expo 2010.
He noted that the visit paid by Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to China yielded dividends as economic cooperation has since then been boosted between the two countries. Al Boot said that China President Hu Jintao stressed during Sheikh Mohammed's visit to China that his country was aspiring to make the UAE its first trade partner in the Gulf and the Middle East.
About volume of the trade exchange between the UAE and China (the fastest growing economy in the world), Al Boot said year 2008 witnessed huge growth in the size of trade exchange between the two countries, as it rose to US$25 billion compared to US$20.4 billion in 2007. He expected the trade exchange would jump this year to US$30 billion due to flow of exports, imports, and re-exportation between the two countries.
"70 per cent of the Chinese exports to the UAE are re-exported to GCC, Africa and East Asia. The volume of Chinese exports to the UAE surged by 50 per cent in 2007 to US$17 billion, Dh62.3 billion, while the UAE exports to China increased by 7.7 per cent to US$3 billion (Dh11 billion).
Al Boot said the UAE is the second largest trade partner to China in the GCC and the largest market for the Chinese exports market in the region.
About the Chinese investments in the UAE, he said there are over 3, 000 Chinese workers at different sectors in the UAE, particularly at real estate, construction, commerce, service and tourism sectors. About 200, 000 Chinese expatriates live in the UAE.
Al Boot hoped that Etihad Airline would soon launch direct trips from Abu Dhabi to Shanghai, the economic and commercial capital of China, adding that the launch of trips from Abu Dhabi to Beijing was pivotal in boosting trade, tourism and investment between the two countries. The relations between the two countries are growing faster due to determination of the leadership in both countries to enhance trade ties.
He called on tourism agencies to open representative offices in Beijing and Shanghai, citing the positive results reaped by the presence of Dubai Tourism Authority in China. Al Boot noted that China wishes to have distinguished relations with the UAE in the area of tourism.
On the tourism exchange, he said the annual Chinese visitors to the UAE are 250, 000 and the number could increase in the wake of the signing Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. The agreement was signed by the UAE Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his official visit to China in April 2007.
He noted that most of the Chinese official delegations, who visit the Gulf and the Middle East, use Emirates Airline.
