S. Korea to mark foundation of provisional gov't under Japanese rule
SEOUL, April 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will hold a ceremony next week to mark the
90th founding anniversary of Korea's provisional government under Japanese
colonial rule, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Thursday.
The ceremony will be held Monday at Baekbeom Square Park on Mount Namsan in
Seoul. Baekbeom was the pen name of Kim Koo, a prominent independence fighter who
headed the provisional government from 1940 until the country's liberation at the
end of World War II. Japan colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910-1945.
"Marking the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the provisional government of
Korea, the government decided to commemorate the occasion as a way of showing
respect to the love of those who died for their country and also to help
emphasize the importance of patriotism," Cheong Wa Dae said in a press release.
Similar ceremonies will also be held in China's Shanghai and Chongqing, a city in
Sichuan Province where the provisional government was first established to escape
the influence of the Japanese colonial government here.
A concert will be also held at the National Theater of Korea and a nationwide
photo exhibition will bring images of independence fighters to Korea's major
cities, including Busan, Daejeon and Gwangju, it added.
