S. Korean minister to attend conference on Pakistan in Tokyo
SEOUL, April 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan plans to
visit Tokyo later this week to attend an international donors conference on
Pakistan, his ministry announced Monday.
During his three-day Japanese trip set to begin Thursday, Yu will also hold talks
with his Japanese counterpart on bilateral issues.
The conference slated for Friday is expected to draw representatives from more
than 20 nations, including the U.S. and Britain, and the U.N., the World Bank,
and the International Monetary Fund, according to ministry spokesman Moon
Tae-young.
"They will discuss ways of stabilizing Pakistan and detailed assistance plans,"
Moon said. "We will express support for the efforts and announce our government's
aid plan."
On the sidelines of the event, Yu plans to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister
Hirofumi Nakasone to discuss Seoul-Tokyo ties, the North Korean issue, and other
issues of mutual concerns, added the spokesman.
The U.S. administration of President Barack Obama is seeking to bring Pakistan,
which borders Afghanistan, to its side in its troubled counter-terrorism
campaign.
