Korean metal art exhibition kicks off in Washington D.C.
By Hwang Doo-hyong
WASHINGTON, April 14 (Yonhap) -- An exhibition of traditional and contemporary
Korean metal art works and jewelry opened here Tuesday as part of a series of
Korean cultural events sponsored by the Korean embassy.
The 12-day exhibition, titled Korean Art and Jewelry Design Today, features
hundreds of traditional and contemporary designs for necklaces, rings, brooches,
tea sets, decorative containers, office instruments, desk sculptures and other
works from 92 Korean and Korean-American artists.
"This exhibit is also part of the city-wide Craft Week D.C. from April 22-26,
organized by local galleries and the James Renwick Alliance in coordination with
the 2009 Smithsonian Craft Show from April 23-26," said Chung Hyeyoon,
spokesperson of KORUS House, the Korean embassy's culture and information center.
Gallery Haute Classe, the exhibit organizer, is the first professional gallery to
introduce the works of Korean industrial artists in Washington.
A free public reception for the exhibit will be held at KORUS House in downtown
Washington from 6:30 p.m.
"I would like to introduce the beauty and excellence of the Korean metal art by
way of the unique emotions of Koreans and the traditional Korean metal art
technique," said Lee Hyang-sook, president of Gallery Haute Classe.
