S. Korea to import pilot training equipment from Turkey

By Sam Kim
SEOUL, April 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has agreed to purchase 130 billion won
(US$97 million) worth of air force pilot training equipment from Turkey, its
defense ministry said Wednesday.

Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul was to visit South Korea later in the day to
ink the deal, which would provide "electronic warfare training systems" starting
in 2011, the Ministry of National Defense here said in a statement.
The systems use electronic signals to train and test pilots in simulations
involving enemy aircraft, surface-to-air missiles and artillery guns, according
to the ministry.
South Korea and Turkey are active partners in defense trade. South Korea has
exported K-9 artillery guns and KT-1 training aircraft to Turkey while sharing
tank development technology.
Gonul is to meet with Lee Sang-hee, his South Korean counterpart, on Thursday and
will return home the following day.
