LG Display willing to supply LCD panels for Sony TVs: CEO

GUMI, South Korea, April 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korean flat-screen maker LG Display
Co. is willing to supply its liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for Sony Corp.
televisions, its chief executive said Wednesday.
In a news conference held after an opening ceremony for a new production line in
Gumi, about 260 km southeast of Seoul, LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo confirmed a
recent report that the world's second-largest maker of LCDs is in talks with the
Japanese firm to provide it with LCD panels for 32-, 37- and 42-inch televisions.
"We have no reason not to provide our panels to Sony, and I believe there is no
reason for Sony not to buy from us. We knocked on their door first and are
waiting for their response," Kwon said, adding that his company has already been
providing LCD panels for Sony computers, including laptops.
Sony has been buying 60 percent of its television panels from S-LCD Corp. -- its
joint venture with Samsung Electronics Co. -- while Taiwanese manufacturers,
including AU Optronics Corp., have been supplying the rest.
If LG Display and Sony successfully conclude their talks, it will mark a
significant shift in the LCD industry, market watchers say.
The world's largest LCD maker, Samsung Electronics, has been eager to cooperate
with the Japanese electronics giant in the development of the newest LCD panels.
