LG Electronics to support U.N. fight against hunger in Africa
SEOUL, April 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean electronics giant LG Electronics Inc.
said Thursday that it has agreed to support efforts by the United Nations to
provide food aid to Africa.
LG Electronics signed a memorandum of understanding with the World Food Programme
(WFP) at the company's headquarters in Seoul, pledging a total of 3 billion won
(US$2.28 million) to provide food aid to famine-stricken people in Kenya and
Ethiopia.
In support of the U.N. food agency, LG Electronics will donate 1 billion won per
year for three years under the banner of a "Partnership of Hope."
"This agreement marks the WFP's first large-scale multi-year corporate donation
from Asia to Africa," remarked Monica Marshall, head of global private
partnerships at the WFP.
The donation will be used to help some 23,000 of the poorest and most vulnerable
people in the Nairobi slums of Kenya and in remote rural areas of Ethiopia, the
company said.
