Roh`s wife received $30,000 from businessman in 2006: aide
SEOUL, April 17 (Yonhap) -- The wife of former President Roh Moo-hyun received
US$30,000 from a local business executive in 2006, a top Roh aide admitted on
Friday, as prosecutors gear up to summon Roh next week at the earliest in a
widening probe into allegations of his corruption.
Kwon Yang-sook, the former first lady, has already been under investigation over
an allegation that she accepted $1 million and 300 million won ($225,000) from
another business executive, though prosecutors suspect Roh to have been the final
recipient of all the bribes.
Kwon was questioned by prosecutors last week following an earlier confession by
Roh that his wife received money from Park Yeon-cha, head of shoe manufacturer
Taekwang Industry, to repay debts during his presidential term in 2007.
Roh did not offer any specific amount but prosecutors suspect that the former
first family received $1 million and 300 million won from Park on two separate
occasions. Park, a former financial backer of Roh, is also alleged to have
offered bribes worth billions of won to Roh's aides and former government
officials.
Moon Jae-in, a former chief of staff to Roh, said in a telephone interview with
Yonhap News Agency Friday that Kwon received $30,000 from Chung Dae-kun, then
head of the state-run National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, or Nonghyup,
back in 2006. The money was delivered through Jung Sang-moon, a former
presidential aide.
The money was given to Kwon in September of that year, just few days ahead of
Roh's 60th birthday, as a gift for him, according to Moon.
"Kwon did not tell Roh about this. Her explanation (for not telling Roh then) was
that Roh would have likely scolded her and told her to immediately return it,"
Moon said. Kwon told investigators about the incident during last week's
interrogation.
According to Moon, Kwon also denied allegations that her younger brother, Kwon
Ki-moon, headed a company supposedly established by her only son, Roh Gun-ho,
with investment from Park.
Meanwhile, the 36-year-old Roh Gun-ho was summoned to prosecutors for the fourth
time on Friday to face questioning over whether the investment of $5 million he
received from Park was legitimate.
