Sales of S. Korean cars soar in Africa
SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean carmakers, led by Hyundai Motor Co., saw their sales in Africa rise last month despite the global economic slump, industry sources said Saturday.
Hyundai Motor, the country's leading automaker, sold 10,661 units in Africa last
month, up 3.1 percent from a year earlier. Its affiliate, Kia Motors Corp., sold
5,079 units on the continent last month, a huge on-year jump of 49.6 percent,
according to the sources.
The rise in auto sales in Africa is in sharp contrast to the plunges witnessed
elsewhere.
In the first three months of the year, local automakers' overseas sales plummeted
36.6 percent annually to 436,587 units.
According to the sources, auto sales in other regions such as Europe and Latin
America have continued to fall in line with the global economic downturn, while
auto demand from Africa and the Middle East has remained solid.
