Chronology of major events in inter-Korean relations
SEOUL, April 21 (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronology of major events in relations between South and North Korea, which are scheduled to meet for the first time in more than a year on Tuesday.
July 4, 1972 -- South and North Korea issue a historic joint statement pledging
to cooperate towards national reunification.
Oct. 9, 1983 -- A bombing apparently aimed at a South Korean delegation visiting
Myanmar kills 21 people, while President Chun Doo-hwan narrowly escapes. Seoul
linked the attack to North Korean spies, a charge denied by Pyongyang.
Nov. 9, 1987 -- All 269 passengers and crew aboard a South Korean airliner are
killed when a bomb causes it to explode in mid-air. South Korea holds North Korea
responsible for the bombing.
March 1991 -- The two Koreas field a joint team to a world table tennis
competition held in Chiba, Japan.
July 8, 1994 -- North Korean founder and President Kim Il-sung dies and is
succeeded by his son, Kim Jong-il. A scheduled inter-Korean summit is canceled
due to the elder Kim's sudden death.
June 15, 2000 -- South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim
Jong-il hold the first inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang and later announce a
joint statement that leads to reduced tension and a slew of reconciliatory
projects.
Aug. 15, 2000 -- More than 1,000 Koreans separated between the border after the
Korean War meet in the first family reunion event.
June 30, 2003 -- Hyundai Asan begins the construction of an industrial park in
the North's border town of Kaesong.
Oct. 9, 2006 -- North Korea conducts its first-ever nuclear bomb test.
May 17, 2007 -- Trains cross the border between North and South Korea for the
first time since the border was sealed during the Korean War.
Oct. 2-4, 2007 -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and North Korean leader Kim
Jong-il hold the second inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang and later announce a
joint statement aimed at reducing military tension and expanding economic
exchanges.
July 11, 2008 -- A South Korean housewife from Seoul is shot dead by a North
Korean soldier at the Mount Kumgang tour resort. Seoul suspends the tour and
demands access to the site of the shooting for its investigation.
March 30, 2009 -- North Korea detains a South Korean employee of Hyundai Asan
Corp. in the Kaesong complex, accusing him of criticizing Pyongyang's political
system and attempting to incite a local female worker to defect.
April 5 -- North Korea launches what it calls the Kwangmyongsong-2 satellite and
claims the launch a success. Outside monitors later said no such object entered
orbit.
April 9 -- North Korea reelects leader Kim Jong-il as chairman of the National
Defense Commission in a parliamentary meeting.
April 14 -- The U.N. Security Council adopts a presidential statement condemning
the North Korean launch as violating a 2006 U.N. resolution. North Korea
withdraws from the six-party talks.
April 16 -- North Korea proposes the first official inter-Korean talks with the
Lee Myung-bak government over the Kaesong complex, saying it has an "important
notice" to announce.
