COVID-19: Thailand Again Reports No New Cases, Fatalities

By Linda Khoo Hui Li BANGKOK, May 16 (Bernama) -- Thailand today again reported zero new COVID-19 cases and fatalities, keeping the number of infections at 3,025 with 56 deaths. Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Thaweesilp Wissanuyothin thanked all Thais for their cooperation in fighting COVID-19. “I hope zero new cases and fatalities will stay with us longer or at least single-digit of new cases as the second phase of easing restrictions will start tomorrow,” he said at a COVID-19 daily briefing today. A total of 2,855 of the 3,025 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals while 114 remain at wards. On Wednesday, Thailand recorded zero new cases and fatalities for the first time since March 9. Since the first phase of relaxation on May 3, Thailand has recorded single-digit daily new cases, except for 18 cases on May 4 involving detainees at an immigration detention centre in the southern province of Songkhla. Thailand, the first country outside China which reported COVID-19 cases, recorded the highest daily number of 188 confirmed cases on March 22. Meanwhile, the second phase of easing restrictions will kick off tomorrow with more businesses and venues reopening for business, including shopping malls and department stores. Besides that, the nationwide curfew will be shortened by an hour, from 11 pm to 4 am compared to from 10 pm to 4 am previously. Meanwhile, Thailand has removed China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau from its list of disease infected zones for COVID-19. The announcement was published in the Royal Gazette on Friday. The COVID-19 situation in these countries and territories and their effectiveness in containing the deadly virus has improved, said the announcement. -- BERNAMA
