Muslims In Singapore To Celebrate Eid-Ul Fitr On Sunday

By Massita Ahmad SINGAPORE, May 22 (Bernama) -- Muslims in Singapore will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid-ul Fitr)on Sunday, said the republic’s Mufti Dr Naziruddin Mohd Nasir. Naziruddin said according to astronomical calculations, the crescent for the month of Syawal did not appear this evening after sunset as it had set earlier. “This signifies that tomorrow will be the end of 30 days of Ramadan. “As such, I am pleased to announce that the first day of Syawal for the year of 1441 Hijrah falls on Sunday, May 24, 2020,” he said in a statement today. Singapura has almost one million Muslims, about 15 per cent of its population. “I would like to take this opportunity to seek forgiveness for any shortcomings and wish all Muslims in Singapore: ‘Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri’. May Allah S.W.T. bless us all and accept all your good deeds,” he added. Naziruddin said Muslims in Singapore were determined to play their part in the fight against COVID-19. 1 Syawal in Singapore falls within the period of the circuit breaker ending on June 1, which was implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19, which means houses of worship including mosques will remain closed. The Singapore Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) has reminded Muslims to abide by the ban on mass gatherings and to refrain from making the traditional Aidilfitri visits. -- BERNAMA
