President says Korean economy will realize 'miraculous' recovery
By Byun Duk-kun
SEOUL, April 23 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak Thursday said South Korea
will make a miraculous comeback from the global economic and financial crisis
before any other nation, saying the Korean people have historically united
stronger at times of difficult challenges.
The president said it will be a repeat of a miracle 10 years ago when the country
emerged from the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
"In the face of the worldwide economic crisis, we are starting a job-sharing
campaign to share the burdens of our neighbors and overcome the crisis," Lee said
in a speech marking the opening of an international floral exhibition, Korea
Floritopia 2009, in the western island of Anmyeondo.
Lee said the holding of the exhibition itself was a miracle as the area was
covered with thousands of tons of oil in the country's worst spill less than two
years ago.
This was possible because over one million people volunteered to help, he said.
"If we overcome this crisis before any other country, we will have accomplished
another miracle," the president said in his speech broadcast nationwide.
