UAE makes considerable headway on Decent Work Programme

Abu Dhabi, April 28 2009 (WAM) - Considerable headway has now been made in the UAE, to construct the Decent Work Country Programme, based on principles and rights at work and carefully adapted to the national situation and its challenges, according to a top International Labour Organisation official.
Roger Plant, Head, Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour, ILO, told a seminar on labour and human rights in Dubai yesterday that the Decent Work Agenda is centred on the four pillars of employment and enterprises, rights at work, social protection and social dialogue.
The event is organized by the Ministry of Labour in association with the International Labour Organization's Regional Office for Arab States and the UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights. “All of this should strengthen partnerships between the ILO and the UAE, and indeed the other GCC countries, together with our key partners in the UN systems including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights,” he said.
“Over the past two years, in the course of several visits to the UAE, I have sincerely appreciated the open dialogue I have had with many individuals, inside and outside the government, on social challenges which it can sometimes take the courage to address.
''I look forward to the same kind of the dialogue in the same spirit today and tomorrow, as a learning experience for all, and the best way towards our shared values of social justice for all,” he added. He thanked the UAE for organising the event to commemorate the ILO's 90th anniversary which is being marked at a time of profound economic and social upheaval.
