Sharjah Ruler opens premises of Union of Arab Universities

Amman - April 28, 2009 (WAM)- H.H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated yesterday premises of the 213-member Union of Arab universities which was built at his own expense.
The venue underlines Sheikh Sultan's support for interaction among Arab universities for the sake of upgrading their performance and catch up with modern educational methods so as to produce a generation loyal to their nation and capable of achieving economic and human resources development.
The opening ceremony was graced by Jordanian Prime Minister Nader Al-Dahab, who represents King Abdullah II of Jordan, Princes Sumia bint Al Hussein, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Waleed Al Maani, and a number of Jordanian top officials, UAE Ambassador to Jordan Ali Al Shamsi, Arab diplomats, cultural counsellors and presidents of universities.
Addressing the audience after cutting the traditional red ribbon, Sheikh Sultan said '' The world of today is one that of knowledge and competition of how to use and develop it ......it's a world of interaction, cooperation and joint action our universities and research centres should shoulder their responsibility of grooming and training next generations.
“Today, we have no serious option but to develop our educational and research institutions and incorporate them with the excellent, competitive production cycle in a prompt manner so as to bridge the gap between us and those advanced countries,” he added.
Sheikh Sultan described the members of union of universities are a real human wealth but is not used properly due to the lack of coordination between research centres and production firms. “We stand ready to support efforts for achieving that coordination," he affirmed. He offered to support the higher education and scientific research institutions to enable the Union deliver its mission.
Dr. Saleh Hashim, Secretary of the Union, paid tribute to Sheikh Sultan for funding the construction of the venue. He asked Sheikh Sultan to accept the honorary chairmanship of the pan-Arab body in recognition of his generous support for the Union. Sheikh Sultan then toured various departments of the 5 donum three-storey building. Later, Sheikh Sultan received the Union Gold Medal from the Jordanian Prime Minister.
