Peru’s Agri Product Exports To Asia Rose 3.1 Per Cent Y-O-Y From Jan-Oct 2020
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24 (Bernama) -- Exports of agricultural products from Peru to Asia increased by 3.1 per cent year-on-year to US$507 million (US$1 = RM4.06) between January and October this year.
Citing statistics from Peru’s National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration, the Peruvian Commission for the Promotion of Exports and Tourism (PROMPERU) said the country’s exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Asia reached US$320 million in the same period, accounting for 10 per cent of Peru’s total fruit and vegetable exports worldwide.
“The main products exported to Asia were fresh grapes (US$109 million); fresh cranberries (US$90 million); avocados (US$69 million) and fresh mandarins (US$18 million),” PROMPERU said in a statement Wednesday.
China, South Korea, India and Japan are already in the top 10 of the main destination markets for Peruvian agri-food exports, it said, adding that the public and private sectors in Peru will continue to work together to expand access to Asian markets for more Peruvian products.
“In the next few months, Peru will gain access to South Korea for produce such as cranberries, citrus fruits and pomegranates; as well as the Japanese market for table grapes, cranberries and pomegranates,” said PROMPERU export director Mario Ocharan.
He said that Peru had rolled out powerful commercial promotion campaigns for products with access to special-interest markets such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Meanwhile, PROMPERU said that Peruvian companies that had attended its recent digital edition of Asia Fruit Logistica On -- a specialised annual trade show and conference event for the Asian and international fruit and vegetable business, saw business deals worth US$50 million involving fruit and vegetables destined for Asia.
With its sights already set on 2021, PROMPERU said the South American nation is finalising the promotional campaigns of the Superfoods Peru brand (https://peru.info/superfoods) which will highlight its leading fruit and vegetables and the world-renowned Andean grains, among other products.
“These campaigns will be rolled out in various countries at the point of sale, retail outlets and the HoReCa (hotel/restaurant/cafe) channel, thus continuing the strategy to position Peruvian products not only among trade professionals, but also to end-consumers,” it said.
Peru has become an international benchmark in the production of agri-food products in recent decades.
It is also the world’s biggest exporter of cranberries, asparagus and quinoa; the second biggest exporter of mandarins; the third of avocados, and the fifth of table grapes.
